Shoulder Impingement Treatment
The shoulder joints allow for the largest range of motion of any joint in the body. This is accomplished with a unique design of two joints that work together to allow the arm to swing in a full circle. Unlike most joints, the tendons and bursa of the glenohumeral joint are located inside the bones, not on the outside. While this design allows for a wide range of motion, there is limited space. When the tissues in the shoulder become inflamed, the joint can be restricted or impinged. Robotic Hip and Knee Replacement LA offers shoulder impingement treatment at our orthopedic clinic in Los Angeles.
The glenohumeral joint in the shoulder has multiple tendons that connect the shoulder blade to the top of the upper arm bone. This group of tendons is called the rotator cuff, which attach the shoulder muscle to the bones. The rotator cuff is located between the arm and shoulder, with a cushion of the shoulder bursa to reduce friction during movement. Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons or bursa swell from inflammation, pressing against the bones of the shoulder joint.
Symptoms of Shoulder Impingement
Shoulder trauma injuries like dislocations or strains, as well as repetitive injuries, can result in rotator cuff tendonitis or shoulder bursitis. When the soft tissues of the shoulder become inflamed within the confinements of bone, it can result in pain and functional issues. Shoulder impingement symptoms include:
- Restricted range of motion
- Weakness in the shoulder and arm
- Pain when lifting or raising arm above the head
- Pain in the front of the shoulder
- Inability to reach behind the body
To resolve shoulder impingement, treatment of the underlying conditions or injuries are needed. Anti-inflammatory medications or injections for tendonitis or bursitis can relieve pressure and pain. Strengthening with physical therapy may be recommended. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove bone spurs or repair tissues in the shoulder to improve mobility.
